The last Box-Office weekend before the summer kicks of, and it was Beyonce in a cheap thriller that won out the day. “Obsessed” starring the bootylicious songstress along with Idris Elba and Ali Larter picked up a generous $28 million despite atrocious reviews. The film which supposedly plays out as a D grade version of “Fatal Attraction” was expected to win but not with numbers as high as it did. However with such a tepid critical reaction and the bigger movies starting to arrive in a few days expect it to vanish soon.
Last weeks chart topper “17 Again” fell to second and scored another $12 million for a $40 million total. The Zac Efron starring teen comedy received few reviews that where better than average but the stars appeal seems to have outweighed the critics. In at third new release “Fighting” opened to $11 million and abad reviews but in fairness it did better than many had predicted. “The Soloist” clocked in next at no.4, with around $9.9 million. Hardly groundbreaking numbers but alot of the critical response was enthusiastic and so maybe even in the forthcoming and crowded summer arena it might find a little shelf life.
“Earth” stole $8.88 million to take its total to $15 million at no.5, whilst in at no.6 “Monsters Vs. Aliens” finally tumbled out of the top five, but with a further $8.5 million and a $175 million total it’s done rather well. It’s probable that Dreamworks would have preferred the picture to cross $200 million but none the less it’s still performed fairly well.
“State of Play” dropped to no.7 on its second week and scored a further $6.8 million now bringing the well reviewed political thrillers total to $25.1 million. At no.8 Miley Cyrus’s “Hannah Montana: The Movie” grabbed $6.44 million for a $68 million total. Rounding out the top 10 where “Fast and Furious” with $6 million and “Crank: High Voltage” with $2.6 million. They have $145 million and $12 million respectively. Roll on the summer.
