Zac Efron’s latest flick “17 Again” stormed the Box-Office this week and came out the clear winner with a $24.1 million total. The movie has received average to fair reviews but the light hearted nature and appeal of its leading man seem to have been enough to draw the teenage girls of America into multiplexes. Efron slowly maturing into a bankable star will treat this as a baby step in his career, but still a step better taken than missed. Another debutant “State of Play” entered at no.2, the film starring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams scored consistently good reviews and made $14.1 million.
In third “Monsters vs. Aliens” added another $13 million to it’s now impressive $163 million roster, whilst last week’s chart topper “Hannah Montana: The Movie” slipped to fourth. That much was predictable, the film always going to have earned the majority of its takings in the first fan filled weekend. It managed $12.7 million for a $56 million total. In at five “Fast and Furious” grappled another $12 million for a $137 million total.
No.6 belonged to the week’s most underperforming newcomer, “Crank: High Voltage”. The Jason Statham action film actually like the original got a mostly kind reception from critics but audiences aren’t as keen, a $6.5 million opening weekend not really good enough in anybody’s books. No.7 housed Seth Rogen and dark comedy “Observe and Report”. On its second week the film took $4 million amounting to a disappointing $19 million total, despite generally favorable reviews. “Knowing” was at eight and crossed the $70 million mark, now totaling $73.5 million in domestic dollars. This week it drew $3.5 million.
Finally in ninth “I Love you, Man” took some $3.3 million for a $65 million total whilst “The Haunting in Connecticut” drew $3 million for a $52 million total.
