Box Office update: “Knowing” is everything at no.1

A fairly soft week at the Box-Office overall, Nicolas Cage powered to no.1 with the largely berated Knowing, the picture scooping an estimated $25 million for a respectable debut. With the bad reviews however and the release of at least one major picture next week its chances of showing much clout probably won’t extend to much further than a fortnight.

In second another new and better received film entered the charts in the form of Paul Rudd starrer I Love You, Man. The comedy also featuring Jason Segel has been solidly reviewed and opened to a decent $18 million. The week’s third new entry faired a little worse despite good reviews and obvious star power, Duplicity with Julia Roberts and Clive Owen managed $14.4 million a so-so beginning to what some must be anticipating being a short lived Box-Office career.
Race to Witch Mountain dropped three places to no.4 and took $13 million, now harboring a $44 million total. The Disney film which enjoyed a good opening weekend now has a lot riding on its performance next week, and with a new kid’s vehicle entering the market with Monsters vs. Aliens, the future is looking a little grim. $60-65 million is the likely mileage this one will be packing.

In fifth Watchmen rounded out its third week with another $10 million for a $99 million total. The comic book adaptation was surprisingly good but with less than $100 million after three weeks parent studio Warner Bros. must be a little disappointed.

Last House on the Left took another $5.9 million for a $24 million total on its second week, the horror remake which has accumulated mixed critical reception took a more than 50% fall in takings, a familiar occurrence within the genre. Expect a $32-35 million total domestic tally. It was at no.6. At no.7 Taken finally tumbled out of the top five to seventh place with $4 million. It now has $133 million in the bank.

At no.8 Slumdog Millionaire took $2.7 million for a $137 million total whilst in ninth Madea Goes to Jail looks to be on the way out with $2.5 million this week and an $87 million total. Finally in tenth Coraline made $2 million for a $73 million total.
